Haunted Highlights
Kent life is set across 28 acres of working farm land and serves to protect and reflect the county’s history.  There are currently 19 buildings on site, some of which have been rescued from destruction across the county and faithfully re-built and restored within the grounds.  Kent Life also boasts a working farm and one of the UK’s last remaining coal fired Oast house left in Britian where hops from our own hop garden are still picked by hand and processed in the traditional method.

Throughout the ‘Gathering of Ghosts’ the public will have full access to all buildings. With a guided supernatural history tour of the site and its buildings, this is a unique opportunity to explore the spookier side of Kent’s history away from the crowds.

  • Kent life is located on the Cobtree Manor Estate thought to be the origin of Dingley Dell, famously referred to by Charles Dickens in the Pickwick Papers
  • After Boxley Abbey (founded in the twelfth century) was dissolved by Henry VIII, much of its estate was given to Sir Thomas Wyatt, forming part of the site upon which the Museum now stands.  It is said that the ghosts of displaced monks still haunt Kent Life's grounds
  • Petts Farmhouse (dating from 1780): When the farmhouse was being dismantled from its original location on the edge of Burham chalk pit, a mysterious mutilated doll was found in a wall of the building. The arms and legs had been cut off and a scarf, representing strangulation, found around its neck - perhaps to curse the inhabitants of the house or protect the people inside from a curse put upon them.  A pair of children’s shoes dating from 1850 was also found, following the tradition at the time of hiding children’s shoes within the house to ward off evil. The ghost of Mrs. Alexander has been spotted several times haunting Petts Farmhouse. Mrs. Alexander was the farmer’s wife who in 1912 was mounting a pony trap outside the building when the pony became ‘spooked’ and jolted, causing Mrs. Alexander’s baby to be thrown from her arms and killed. The ghost of Mrs. Alexander, searching for her baby, is regularly seen outside the Farmhouse and came to prominence with the arrival of Joe, Kent Life's famous ‘psychic puppy’
  • The Tea Rooms (dating from 1880): During World War II a German Fighter Pilot was shot down and wounded in Kent Life's fields.  He was brought into the Tea Rooms where he was attended to by a young nurse before being transferred to Maidstone Hospital. Legend has it that they fell in love and the ghost of the young nurse can be seen walking the Tea Rooms looking for her lost love
  • The Hop Gardens: since the sixteenth century, Kent’s Hop gardens provided a major source of local income. Each September, when the Hops were ready for harvest, casual workers from London would make the trip down to work in the fields for six weeks. Many of these workers died in the area and were buried in unmarked graves. The locals referred to these visitors as ‘ the strangers’ and it is said that the ghosts of these ‘strangers’ roam Kent Life's Hop Gardens in search of recognition
  • Sandling Farmhouse (dated from mid 16th century): George Brundle, who lived on Sandling Farm until his death at ninety-eight in 2001, has been spotted looking out from the farmhouse window to check on his grazing lambs
