Young Farmers

The Cobtree Young Farmers Club is a mixed group of boys and girls who are aged between 10 and 23. None of them are from farming backgrounds but all have one thing in common; their interest in animals.

Every Saturday throughout the year, Young Farmers begin the day with general husbandry of cattle, horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, ducks, and geese. After lunch, activities, outings or events are arranged for the whole group.

Cobtree Young Farmers Club is one of 30 clubs that make up the Kent Federation of Young Farmers Clubs and throughout the year many opportunities arise for members to participate in activities both competitive and social.

The main event in the Cobtree Young Farmers calendar is the Kent County Show, where members show the Kent Life livestock over the three day event at Detling Show ground, invariably returning with an impressive collection of rosettes and certificates.

Many of our farmyard animals here at Kent Life are available to adopt. Adopting an animal makes an ideal gift for you or someone special, click here for more information.

Stories from the Young Farmers

Rock Star Chickens debut in Hoosiers new music video

Lyn, a representative from the Young Farmers Club gives her account of Kent Life’s Rock Star chickens, who debuted on the Hoosiers new music video filmed in March 2008 here in Kent.

Lyn says, ‘Although we were there for five hours, the chickens were only filmed for ten minutes, I was ready with to put them on set for filming, when the director wanted to know if they would stand still, I replied “only if I superglue their feet to the floor!”

Upon the chickens going on set, they left as soon as possible, with the cameraman in hot pursuit. The rock star diva chickens were caught and put back on set and once again they planned their escape route and headed off this time the cameraman running behind them muttering under his breath.

Picture the scene as this happened eight times before we were told, very sternly “that’s it for now” by the director. The chickens were fed, watered and back snuggling in their basket, I was off to the bar for a quick but well deserved half a lager and the odd valium.

The day was very interesting and the chickens were a hit with the crew, all but the cameraman that is. They even nicknamed the chickens Nando and Kentucky.

After a long morning the chickens were ready to go back to their home at Kent Life, the director agreed and we beat a hasty retreat before he changed his mind.
